Today at Nakajo Junior High (aka Duh Central) I had lunch with a couple of my favorite 2nd year students. For such a low level school, they are great kids and I am continously surprised by them. Things I learned today...
Student 1. I don't know her name, but I call her Tinkerbell because she uses a big Peter Pan pen. She has freckles and a chubby face and wears her hair in pigtails. She is 13 years old. Her favorite fruit is pineapple. Her favorite American movie star is Audrey Hepburn. She went to Hong Kong last month because her sister is a flight attendant. Her sister speaks English but she refuses to practice with her.
Student 2. I also don't know her full name, but her nickname is Sue-chan. During class she stares at me like I am the 2nd coming of Christ. She has dark skin and I've never seen her frown. She is unable to speak English because her permanent smile hampers her ability to say anything. Her favorite fruit is watermelon. Her favorite food is Korean kim chee. She eats very slowly.

hey eric,
don't believe everything your teachers tell you. i was told that one of my schools last year was the lowest level in the whole of niigata ken. bullshit! they were great kids, not at all stupid(well a few were but you know what i mean). they just had no interest in exams and writing. they went home after school and helped in the rice fields, watched tv etc.etc. instead of going to juku.they were always super happy to see me and really tried in my classes. it was one of my favourite schools in my entire 3 years here.give me the "dumb" kids anyday i say ;-)
the nakajo kids sound cute.
kel
Plagerist!! You copied those profiles from one of their assignments didn't you? The short sentences give it away you know!! ;-)
You think my kids actually can say or write those things in English? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...
and kel, I agree. The dumb kids usually are the nicest...there isn't all that IQ to get in the way of their good intentions.
i 100% agree with you both, my kids are kinda intellectually challenged (they come to my senior high school after eriks nakajo junior high) but i love them to pieces, they have so much character. And like you said kelly, they just choose not to spend every waking hour studying, they go home after school rather than on to extra study... they just behave like i did at their age... hangin out with mates after school... but unfortunately in japan this equals bad grades and people assuming they are bad kids... and that it soooo wrong... they may not be overly intellectual but they make up for that in other ways, ways that should be embraced and nutured. They give up in these kids too easily.
Sorry, rant over...!
holy freaking christ debbie, you didn't swear or cuss in that whole paragraph. Omedetou, ne!
hahaha, just been marking essay`s on `what do you want to do in the future?` one (17yr old) girl wrote:
when i`m 20 i want to be like sailor moon and save japan. when i`m 30 i want to be like minnie mouse and marry someone who i love like mickie mouse... when i`m 40 i want to be charlies angels and save the world, and when i`m 50 i want to search for moomin valley and live there. But i don`t want to live long. I hope i die soon.
